From Sketch to Download: How I Create Digital Coloring Pages in Procreate
Every coloring page starts with an idea - and Luna was no exception. Here's a behind-the-scenes look at how a mystical moth goes from a rough concept to a polished, downloadable coloring page.
Starting with a Rough Draft
I always begin loose. Using a soft, low-opacity brush in Procreate, I sketch out the basic shapes - the wingspan, body, and the celestial elements surrounding her. This stage is all about composition and flow, not perfection. I'm not precious about it; I just let the idea breathe onto the canvas.
Building Clean Line Work with Layers
Once I'm happy with the rough, I create a new layer on top and drop the opacity of my sketch layer to around 20-30%. This becomes my guide as I begin the real line work using a fine, consistent inking brush.
Layers are everything at this stage. I keep major elements - wings, body, moons, stars - on separate layers so I can adjust, erase, or refine each one independently without disturbing the rest of the drawing. It's a non-destructive workflow that gives me total control.
Finalizing and Exporting
When the line work is complete and every detail is exactly where I want it, I flatten the illustration and do a final review. Then comes the export stage - because digital coloring pages need to work for everyone.
I save Luna in multiple formats:
- PNG (with and without transparent background)
- PDF for easy home printing
- JPG as a universal fallback
Each file is exported at high resolution so the lines stay crisp whether you print at 5×7 or full 8.5×11.
The result? A coloring page that's ready to bring to life - your colors, your magic. You can either upload the transparent PNG file and use your favorite drawing app to color it in any way you like, or print and color!
